GALVINISED STEEL FINNED COILS

The new Grasso GG galvanised steel coils are manufactured to the design and specification of our sister company GEA Goedhart Cooling Equipment BV. (Visit www.goedhart.nl ) They are available in a wide range of sizes, fin spacings and circuiting for flooded refrigerant, chilled liquid or direct expansion applications.

The main advantages are:
  • The 50 x 43.3 staggered pipe spacing enhances the heat transfer co-efficient due to the increased air turbulence, compared to other designs with square or rectangular pitch.
  • The higher efficiency results in a smaller coil with reduced internal volume, thereby limiting the refrigerant charge in the system.
  • It also means the surface area of the coil is reduced making it smaller, lighter and more cost efficient.
  • More than one circuit per row is possible by using multiple start headers.
  • Each coil is designed to provide the optimum refrigerant velocity and pressure drop.
  •
The GG coils are constructed around a module of 50mm x 86.6mm. Sizes are available from 200mm high (4 rows) by 86.6mm deep (2 rows) with a finned length of 200mm. For practical reasons, large coils are sometimes produced in smaller blocks. These blocks are bolted together on site to produce coils of virtually unlimited size and capacities. Fin spacings of 6,8,9,10,12 & 15mm are available as standard with larger spacings and multiple spacings optional.

The fins are 0.5mm thick after galvanising and are spaced with collars on ERW tubes of 19.05mm dia with a 1.5mm wall thickness. The tubes are individually tested to 3000 kPa. After manufacture and galvanising the entire coil is tested under water to 2500 kPa.

The standard coil block has a 50x50x5 steel angle frame to provide rigidity during galvanising and for mounting the fan plenum and drain tray. The frame increases the finned dimention by 100mm.

The overall length of the coil block (over the return bends and headers) is approximately 210mm longer than the finned length.

Fan plenums are manufactured from 1.6mm thick galvanised sheet steel with all cut edges treated with zinc-rich compound. Plenums with more than one fan are fitted with centre plates to ensure proper air distribution. Each coil is fitted with a top plate manufactured from galvanised sheet metal.

Different styles of drain trays are available, usually constructed of galvanised steel. All corners are welded and the weld edges treated. Single thickness trays are used for high temperatures applications and double insulated trays to prevent the formation of condensation. Drain trays are either electrically (with heat dissipation plate) or hot gas heated for applications requiring defrost. For defrosting the coil block either electric heating, hot gas and/or water spray can be incorporated.

Various sizes of aerofoil fans are available with aluminium or GRP fan impellers depending on the application.

The Grasso GG steel coil block can be used in other heat transfer applications such as steam heating, waste heat recovery etc.

Many options are available such as galvanised supports, shut-up socks and non-standard plenums. Although manual selection data is available the heat transfer co-efficients are accurately calculated for every quotation using the Goedhart Cooling Equipment selection programme.

The program optimises the configuration of each cooler to produce the best result.

The following data is required for coil selection:
  • Refrigerant used and evaporating temperature
  • Fin spacing
  • Air-on temperature on required air-leaving temperature
  • Cooling capacity and air quantity
  • Coil face area or air velocity
  • Refrigeration circulation method (flooded or direct expansion)
  •
